We read in Romans 13:8-10, "Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not bear false witness," You shall not covet," and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." When Jesus was asked by a lawyer, which is the greatest commandment, He answered in Matthew 22:37-40, " 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." Jesus took the ten commandments and brought them down to two, the first covering the first four commandments which are vertical commandments between us and God; the second covering the last six commandments which are horizontal commandments between us and our fellow man.

We will all face catastrophes in our lives in a small and personal scale and a larger community scale. The question is how we will choose to respond. If we continually abide in Jesus, in His Word, in prayer, in worship, etc, then when faced with situations, reaching out to others with the love of Jesus should be a natural overflow of our living in the Spirit. But if we choose not to do so, by immersing ourselves in worldly philosophies and worldly living, then our response will be an overflow of that instead. The Christian life is not one that is put on and taken off when we want or when it is convenient. As Paul said in Romans 12:2, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”
