We read in 1 Corinthians 8:1-3, "Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him." Knowledge can be both good and bad. If added to love it builds up and enhances the lives of others. If it leads to intellectual snobbery it can lead to those attaining this knowledge to look down on others. This easily occurs in our walk with God. If some go off to seminary, or simply become more learned in theological positions through higher education, I have heard of them lording it over others who are their brothers and sisters in Christ, often members of the same family. Though one maintains an avid approach through the Scriptures and has a deep love and appreciation for God, they might be looked down upon by the one who grows in the theological knowledge taught in higher institutions of education. This should never be the case.

Jesus said in John 8:31-32, "If you abide in My word, you are my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Jesus simply asked us to keep our eyes on Him: in His word, in prayer, in worship, in fellowship, etc. Intellectual pride has no place in this relationship since He and He alone is Lord. Furthering our knowledge of Him through a careful study of his word is essential. But this knowledge is to be mixed with love and humility. If so, we become vessels to be used by Him in His service. If not, there is a tendency to draw attention to ourselves which can weaken the walk of others. In the Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 6:1-18, Jesus discusses giving, praying, and fasting. Those doing it either do it for God and are blessed or do it to draw attention to themselves and receive no blessing from God. What we are to strive for is to enhance our knowledge of God but to have this along with love.
