A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...
Though not the definition in Webster's Dictionary, a functional definition of the word insanity has been stated as, "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results". We are all imperfect, fallible, individuals that are prone to mistakes of many kinds, yet we insanely continue to trust ourselves to do the right thing. We have a God who is infallible, perfect, and who has never made a mistake, yet Him we so often choose not to trust. I would offer a second functional definition of the word, "insanity", to make a choice to not trust in God who has proven Himself 100% trustworthy, whose predictions have come true 100% of the time often written well before they occurred, whose history has validated His claims 100% of the time, who has the only story from beginning to end which has held true 100% of the time. For those who have chosen not to read His Word which is readily available to anyone with a willing heart, in their own language, in a multitude of reading versions, understand that to God ignorance has never been and never will be an adequate excuse.
Over and over in Scripture God offers promises that always come true. God states in Deuteronomy 28:1-2, "Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:". Throughout the pages of Scripture, we will see these blessings occur for the short periods of time that the Israelites chose to obey and follow the voice of God. Following the blessings on obedience written over 14 verses, we see the much larger section written over 54 verses describing the curses on disobedience. What is amazing is that each and every one of these curses have transpired accurately over the years to follow. Their dispersions from and also the regathering into the land have all been predicted. Notice the warning in 28:52, "They shall besiege you at all your gates until your high and fortified walls, in which you trust, come down throughout all your land; and they shall besiege you at all your gates throughout all your land which the Lord your God has given you." This says it all. Their trust, rather than being on the One True God, was on the strength of their walls. God showed the people He was worthy of their trust, but their trust was fleeting at best. Notice the examples in 29:5,7, "And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet...And when you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us in battle, and we conquered them." Imagine wearing the same clothes for forty years without wearing them out. Shouldn't that be enough to trust Him? Imagine going to war with a better armed opponent whose leader was a giant and not a single member of your troops was killed? Shouldn't that be enough to trust Him?
Everyone has their own reasons and excuses for not choosing to place their complete faith and trust in God. Yet, as I said at the outset, since God has proven Himself absolutely 100% true, 100% perfect, 100% accurate, etc. that our trust should rest on Him, rather than ourselves or anyone or anything else? To choose otherwise defines insanity. If ignorant to these truths, then pick up the Bible and read about them. How many times must we continue to plow down our own road unsuccessfully before we realize that He is the better, and in fact the only right way. Can life really be that easy and full of peace? Just read the gospel accounts of the life and times of Jesus Christ who was 100% following the leading of the Holy Spirit. Like us, obstacles confronted Him daily, yet peace never left Him. Confronted with problems greater than our own, He fully trusted in the only One worthy of our trust.
THIS WEEKS MEMORY VERSE
Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. ~Deuteronomy 31:6
